The “Casa Manuel de Arriaga” is a property from the 19th century, classified as Public Interest, which was the residence of the 1st President of the Portuguese Republic, elected on 24 August 1911 and the subject of a rehabilitation project of the initiative of the Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores through the Regional Directorate of Culture.
With architectural project by Rui Pinto and Ana Robalo | Architects, this cultural equipment evokes the famous faialense figure, Manuel de Arriaga, 1st President of the Portuguese Republic, who was born there and lived much of his youth, highlighting its various functional valences: spaces for long-term exhibition and projection of film, temporary exhibitions, consultation of digitized documentation and library, multipurpose room and green stronghold.
The Casa Manuel de Arriaga, in addition to fixing the memory of the first President of the Republic and his time, projects itself in the substance of his republican ideals and values, as a modern nucleus of reflection and stimulation of civic participation.
