Santa Iria Viewpoint

Santa Iria Viewpoint is located in Porto Formoso, Ribeira Grande municipality. This viewpoint, located in front of Santa Iria Bay, on the north coast of the island, offers a view of the same coast and the location of Porto Formoso. The landscape from here is lush and green until it meets the sea. It was on the visible slopes of this viewpoint that on 3 August 1831 the Battle of Ladeira da Velha was fought, when the troops of D. Pedro IV overcame those of his brother Miguel I of Portugal, having opened the way for the Concession of Évora Monte, an event that ended the Civil War between 1832 and 1834, between the "liberais" and the "miguelistas" forces.
